Burkett Center for Special Needs Students

Jefferson County Board of Education

Giving an aging facility an exciting, new life serving students with special needs.

The Davis team was proud to work with the Jefferson County Board of Education to renovate the original Mortimer Jordan High School, with portions dating from the 1920’s to the 1990’s, into a school to accommodate special needs children from preschool to high school age. In addition, the facility also includes space for non-special needs pre-kindergarten developmental instruction. The renovated spaces include sensory rooms, developmental physical education, classroom, developmental life skills spaces, special restroom facilities, and a cafeteria. Special care was taken in the use of colors in the interior design to assist with student wayfinding.

The creativity that Davis displayed in
converting the old Mortimer Jordan High School to the Burkett Center for Special Needs Students brought exciting new life to a 50 plus year old structure. They listened closely to our specific needs and concerns, and today the students and staff are the recipients of their efforts.
