Drummond Lyon Hall

University of Alabama

Drummond Lyon Hall serves as the new home for the School of Fashion and Design, offering a dynamic, four-story space, dedicated to fostering creativity and collaboration. This facility not only supports students and faculty in their design endeavors, but also houses a dedicated area for preserving and highlighting the fashion archives, enhancing both education and innovation within the program.

The basement level of the School of Fashion and Design plays a vital role in the institution's core function. It houses the fashion archive alongside essential preservation facilities such as a collections workroom and a conservation lab. In these areas, students work closely with faculty to learn preservation techniques and processes. The main floor of the building features a large lecture hall and event space designed for speakers and various functions, as well as an exhibition gallery. The second floor serves as a hub for student collaboration, featuring a student exhibition gallery, and a library. Finally, the third floor accommodates the college's administrative offices, offering an open office layout and a balcony.

Our design also incorporated a new connector courtyard between Adams Hall and the new Drummond Lyon Hall. Adams Hall, serving as a classroom building for the school, required this open connection. The courtyard functions as both a student gathering space and an event venue. In both Drummond Lyon Hall and the adjacent courtyard, the focus on collaboration and learning was paramount.
