Legacy Plaza

The Equal Justice Initiative partnered with Davis Architects to design a plaza and additional parking adjacent to the Legacy Museum in downtown Montgomery. The owner’s goal was to provide a space for visitors to reflect on their experience after touring the museum.

This design consists of an upper plaza and a lower lawn separated by a terrace with traditional bench seating and plantings. The upper plaza is partially covered by canopies with table seating for use of the restaurant within the museum and with steps leading down to the terrace. The height change was a response to the natural topography of the site but had the added benefit of framing views of the sculptures on the lower lawn. Circular seating arrangements are intermittently placed on the lower lawn to encourage guest conversation and reflection.
